For natural entrepreneurs, a business start-up is as normal as breathing..
... but for others self-employment is an alarming prospect.
But the British Government encourages business start-ups, particularly if you're over 50. Before you take the plunge and become self employed you might ask yourself:
- Do I really need the hassle?
- A business start-up is a full time in-your-face for 3-5 years. Do you really need it?
- What are the risks?
- If it doesn't work it will cost you money and reputation.
- Have I got Time?
- Delaying your retirement can result in your missing out on those first few years of retirement, with health and body still reasonably good. Do you really want to do this?
But if you're really committed there's a wealth of help and guidance out there and much of it is free.
Microbusinesses

The idea of Microbusinesses started in the third world where special banks make Microloans to set local entrepreneurs up in small businesses.
Here in L3P we define them as businesses created with minimal capital to top up a pension and provide an interest.
eBay, in particular, and the internet in general, make eCommerce the obvious way to go.
You can use eBay, or even set up an online shop with zero investment and only the most basic IT skills.
So we've set up Microbusinesses Forum to collect your views on the topic and its possibilities.
Business start-ups and self-employment are natural for entrepreneurs, but for most people it would be scary to start a business.
